Scavenger Hunts for children's parties

Has your child reached the age of wanting a birthday party, with all their little friends from preschool coming along? It can be an enormous challenge! Entertaining a houseful of energetic three to five year-old's is a daunting task. Here is one tip for your next party to make it less stressful for you as the organiser, and more fun for your little party-goers.

A scavenger hunt is a great way to keep little ones busy outside. They will run and giggle, and be delighted with the treasures they find. It's a good break from indoor play, and gives the children a chance to let off some steam or run off some of that extra excitement from being at a party.

The first step is to choose the items for the scavenger hunt. This will depend on the theme of your party. Small dinosaurs, little cars, farm animals, jungle animals, sparkly hair clips, bracelets, treasure bags with beads inside - the range is enormous. Choose something that will not be damaged by being placed outside in the grass or bushes. The easiest approach is to scour your local dollar shops or discount stores for bags of inexpensive, small toys that you can buy in bulk. It's best to budget on four or five small gifts for each child as they will appreciate an overflowing handful of goodies much more than one larger single item. In an emergency you can choose wrapped lollies or chocolates, but these disappear quickly and the joy of the hunt is quickly forgotten. Toys which they can take home and enjoy not only today but in the days to come will make a much greater impact. They can talk about their little treasures and the fun they had with their parents and peers, and that makes it much more special for them as well.

The second step is to decide where to have the scavenger hunt. A large backyard is ideal, as is a local park or picnic area. It helps to have an area with clear boundaries to keep the search area contained. There are hiding spots everywhere - just under bushes, on low branches in trees, in a tuft of grass or low-growing border plants, alongside decorative features or behind pot plants. If you have an outside structure like a pergola or BBQ area there are multiple places here too. Remember that the gifts don't need to be completely hidden for this age group to enjoy the hunt, although with older children the challenges can be made more complex.

The third step is to decide when to have the scavenger hunt. It seems best to have it in the later part of the party, when free play and sharing toys no longer comes easily. If possible, organise a few parents to help place out the treasures while the children are inside with another activity. When they are placing gifts outside, remember to ask them to reserve several items in their pockets at the end - there are always children who struggle to find these goodies, and it is easy to quietly drop something from a pocket in front of a child while they are looking the other way. If you have older children at the party they may also be willing to help those who have trouble finding the toys.

With these few simple strategies in place your little guests will go home with a handful of treasures and the memories of a fun time with their friends. The delight of seeing them find your gifts will hopefully bring you pleasure as well, and help ease the effort of providing an enjoyable time at your preschooler's party.

Contributor's Note

I have two preschool-aged children who love birthday parties, and regularly ask if they can please have another one next week... The idea of waiting a whole year is quite difficult!
